Early Literacy
Toddlerhood is the best time to begin actively promoting early literacy. Toddlers are working on progressing from using pointing to communicate to using one, two, and then eventually three word sentences. They understand simple instructions, although don’t always follow them. Language development typically takes off around 18 months, and by the time they are two, children have learned between 100-1,000 words.
It is during toddlerhood that children begin to experiment with plurals and tenses. Toddlers love singing, nursery rhymes, finger plays, and reading books. They love to color and draw with crayons and markers and progress from making random strokes to drawing a picture with deliberation where they can tell you what they drew.
Sonnets Academy transitions our early literacy promotion smoothly from toddlers to twos and preschool to prekindergarten, so that by the time your child is ready for kindergarten, they not only know some of the fundamentals of reading, phonetics, handwriting and spelling, but they have established a love of stories, books, and learning in general.
