With a Dreamy Far Off Look, & Their Nose Stuck in a Book…

National Literacy Month!

During literacy month at Sonnets, we focused on fostering a love for reading and language development in young children. Our classrooms provided an environment that encouraged children of all ages to explore books, stories, and various forms of written expression. Our literacy activities were designed to be engaging and interactive, aiming to spark children’s curiosity and imagination. Through storytelling, reading aloud, and hands-on literacy experiences, the children were able to build on their early literacy skills and have fun while doing so! Literacy month provides a valuable opportunity to celebrate the joys of reading and to emphasize the importance of literacy in a child’s overall development.

Last month at Sonnets, children had the opportunity to bring in their favorite story to read with friends. We dressed up as our favorite characters and shared what made the character important to us and the story they were telling.

Book Discovery

Our classrooms thoughtfully integrate books into learning centers and other areas to encourage discovery and exploration for all ages. Reading aloud to infants:

  • builds vocabulary knowledge & comprehension

  • encourages the learning of names and meanings of the objects, actions, people, and ideas all around them

Pre-K Science Fair

Children are naturally curious and eager to learn, making it the perfect time to introduce them to basic scientific concepts through fun and interactive experiments. Our PreK Science Fair allowed children to develop their critical thinking skills and cultivate a love for discovery. Parents and teachers witnessed the joy and excitement on the faces of these budding scientists as they showcased their projects and shared their newfound knowledge with others.

Home to School Connection

Parents & family members joined our classrooms to share their favorite stories with eager young listeners - not only fostering a love for reading but also strengthening the bond between home & school. These moments create lasting memories for children and highlight the value of community involvement in education. Thank you to all who took the time to make Literacy Month special!

THE SONNeTS LEARNING PHILOSoPHY

Sonnets embraces a balanced approach to early childhood education: nurturing your child’s social-emotional skills, their excitement about play & discovery, and their confidence & readiness for future learning. Sonnets has developed a comprehensive roadmap of developmentally-appropriate curricular objectives from early infancy through pre-kindergarten. Teachers incorporate objectives into lesson plans and continuously assess each child’s proficiency in each skill to aid in personalization.

Active and experiential learning comes alive through whole group, small group, individual, and pairs-based instruction. Open-ended stations and free play place the focus on the process of engaging in the activity rather than on a desired outcome — encouraging creativity, curiosity, and overall cognitive engagement. Hands-on projects reinforce a collaborative approach to a community-based learning environment.
