Onomatopoeia? My What a Sensory World!

Bing, Bam, Boom!

Exploring the delightful world of words that sound like what they describe can be both educational & fun. Children eagerly mimic animal sounds, the crunching of leaves, or the sirens of a firetruck, grasping the concept with enthusiasm. This early exposure to onomatopoeia not only nurtures their language development but also encourages their creativity, imagination, and sensory awareness. Last month at Sonnets, we focused on building our vocabulary and enhancing our ability to make connections between words and the world around us. We are also grateful for families who were able to participate in our school activities/events this November. They witnessed first-hand the growth of their little ones as they embraced the concept of thankfulness.

Each day, we stepped into the marvelous worlds of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. We encouraged our little learners to observe colors, patterns, and shapes, to listen to the symphony of sounds at any given moment, to discover different textures and temperatures, to taste a variety of flavors, and to identify a range of scents. By engaging their senses, we empowered our preschoolers to connect with their environment, laying the foundation for future learning and embracing the wonders that await them.

Crunchy Leaves

We fully immersed ourselves in all things Fall last month. Through hands-on activities & engaging lessons, we introduced our students to the magical world of leaves & their role in nature. We examined different types of leaves, their colors, shapes, and textures. Our students eagerly collected fallen leaves during nature walks and read books about the season while outdoors listening to the rusting of the leaves around us.

Caring & Sharing

Engaging infants in simple activities, such as sharing toys with their peers, encourages them to recognize the needs and feelings of others. While they may not fully comprehend the idea of sharing at such a young age, consistent modeling and gentle guidance helps them to grasp the joy of giving and the value of sharing.

Thankful Turkeys

November cultivated a spirit of thankfulness, instilling gratitude in our daily routines and activities. Together, parents, families, teachers, and children play an integral role in this journey of gratitude, building a strong foundation of appreciation and compassion.

THE SONNeTS LEARNING PHILOSoPHY

Sonnets has developed a comprehensive roadmap of developmentally-appropriate curricular objectives from early infancy through pre-kindergarten across the following domains: cognitive, motor, social, emotional, communication, self help, executive functioning, symbolic & creative thinking, language & literacy, math, science, and geography. Teachers incorporate objectives into lesson plans and assess each child’s proficiency in each skill to aid in personalization.

Learning at Sonnets is active and experiential and can be teacher-guided, child-led, or collaborative. Learning comes alive through whole-group lessons, stations, open-ended projects, and free play. Open-ended activities place the focus on the process of engaging in the activity rather than on a desired outcome – encouraging creativity, curiosity, and overall cognitive engagement.
